So you want to try out a motorhome, but where do you start? You’ve seen them on the highway, you know they vary in size and style… and that’s where your knowledge ends, right? Our staff is full of experts on all types of motorhome rentals, but if you’d like a brief intro before you call us, here is a primer on the RVs we provide:
Class A: Motorcoaches
The three main categories are Class A, Class B and Class C, with a couple subcategories squeezed in. A Class A motorhome resembles a bus, with the driving compartment being an integral part of the vehicle’s interior. Its foundation, or chassis, has either a rear engine (making the motorhome a “diesel pusher”) or a gasoline-powered, front-engine chassis.
But common to all Class A motorcoaches are the generous floor plan, abundant storage space and luxurious amenities. Many of these vehicles have all the comforts of a stationary home, often boasting full-size appliances, spacious bathroom and bedroom suites, complete with large showers and even a king-sized bed.
If there is a down-side to these awesome RVs, they can be tricky to maneuver around town, necessitating a smaller vehicle to be towed behind for running errands and such. Some folks are uncomfortable with the driving compartment being part of the living space, claiming they always feel they are in a vehicle.
But they are wonderful for highway driving. The wide front windshield is awesome for the scenery you’ll catch, and the higher driving position makes it easier to view the road ahead. Because the living and driving areas are integrated, the entire motorhome is accessible while on the road, making stops for bathroom- and dinner-breaks a thing of the past.
Class B: Camper Van
Smaller than the Class A and Class C motorhomes, the Class B’s look like vans, because they are. They generally have a raised roof, allowing you to walk upright throughout the cabin, and although they don’t have the large floor plan of a Class A, every bit of space is maximized, and they are very easy to hook up at campgrounds.
The Class B is very comfortable to drive, maneuvering and parking easily which eliminates the need for an additional vehicle to tool around in. And the fuel mileage makes this one of the most affordable motorhome rentals. While larger motorhomes can get between 7-11 miles per gallon on average, the camper vans will get almost double that, anywhere from 10 to 20. The mileage will vary depending on the size of the vehicle and whether the engine takes gas or diesel.
When talking pros and cons of the Class B, its compact size makes it practical only for shorter trips and smaller families, and definitely not for a full-time RV lifestyle. On the plus side, it drives just like a van, is the most affordable, and can access campsites that are too small for the larger RVs.
Class C: Cab-overs
The distinguishing feature of the Class C is the compartment over the driving cab (hence the nickname, “cab-overs”), traditionally used for a bed. In newer models, the cab-over may be used to house extra storage or an entertainment system.
The Class C is built on a truck or cut-away van chassis, which means it drives similarly to a large U-Haul. Some manufacturers are using semi-truck chassis to build very large Class C motorhomes, whose size and amenities rival those of a luxurious Class A vehicle. Because the cab is part of the chassis, it has the dual advantage of having access to the living area, but having the illusion of a separate driving compartment, being a step down from the main living quarters.
In drive-ability the Class C resembles the Class B, but with half the mileage. What it lacks in fuel efficiency it more than makes up for in features, which are more similar to the Class A. Some C’s even have slide-outs like the A’s, extending the interior space even more. And most Class C’s can sleep 6-8 people, making it ideal among motorhome rentals for active or larger families.
